Academy Embraces Icelandic Tradition with Jólabókaflóð Celebration

Christmas came early for some of our students after they received a book and chocolates in the spirit of a Christmas Eve Icelandic tradition. Our academy is once again hosting its annual Jólabókaflóð, or "book flood," event. This cherished tradition, celebrated on Christmas Eve in Iceland, involves exchanging books and spending the evening reading by a cosy fire while enjoying chocolate.

Librarian Miss Robinson wanted to reward students who have borrowed the most library books since September and thought adopting the tradition was a great seasonal way to reward and celebrate our keenest readers. “We have been doing this for several years now. It’s a fantastic way to encourage younger readers and is a wonderful thing to do for Christmas,” she said. “It means we can also celebrate our top borrowers and reward them for their continued enjoyment of reading,” she added.

Jólabókaflóð is a fabulous Icelandic Christmas tradition which roughly translates as 'Christmas book flood.' On Christmas Eve, people exchange gifts of books and then read them straight away, snuggled up in front of the fire, eating chocolate or drinking hot chocolate. It sounds like the perfect idea to us!

The winning students from each year group had the chance to pick a book of their choice and received some chocolate treats. This year’s winners were Selena, Odeta, Tom, Om, Kaitlyn, Isobelle, Toby, Callum, Kassia, Deborah, Karolina, and Oscar who have shown exceptional dedication to reading throughout the year. Congratulations to all the participants for making this tradition a memorable part of our academy's holiday celebrations!
