Top marks and an international research project for Vojini

Taking part in an international research project including a trip to Cambridge University was on the agenda this summer for student Vojini Fernando who achieved a fantastic set of GCSE results.

With Grade 9s in biology, chemistry, French, maths, physics and Grade 8 in computer science, English language and statistics and Grade 7 in English literature - results day was certainly one to celebrate.

Vojini also gained full funding to take part in the Ferry Path Education programme for young researchers, which is a nine-week academic session for students to gain invaluable research skills working alongside University of Cambridge academics.

“We learnt so much about biotechnology in detail, in terms of neurodegenerative diseases, protein aggregation, stem cell therapy and so much more,” she said.

“It was a very engaging project as well because we were able to interact with students and lecturers from all around the world. We exchanged our specific interests in terms of scientific research and learnt more about the world of research from the lecturers.

“We even had a tour to Cambridge University, which was probably one of the most interesting parts of the whole course as we had the opportunity to see many colleges and explore the history of the university. We ended the course with a presentation on a specific topic of choice in relation to biotechnology which was a very engaging and interesting session,” she added.

Vojini is staying at our academy to study A levels in biology, chemistry, maths and further maths.

“Vojini worked incredibly hard to achieve the results she did, and we look forward to watching her continuing to learn and impress over the coming two years. Gaining a place on the Ferry Path Education programme was a fantastic opportunity which Vojini took to broaden her knowledge. She really embodies our academy’s ethos of Transform, Challenge and Aspire,” said Mrs Tarsitano, Year 11 Raising Standards Leader and Vice Principal for Outcomes.
