Volunteer now to help young readers over the summer
A call has gone out for volunteers to help this year’s Summer Reading Challenge being held across Cambridgeshire.
Helping at the library during the holidays will involve promoting and delivering the reading challenge to children, their carers and supporting events and activities.
Marvellous Makers Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to read six books and talk to library staff or volunteers about them. They collect stickers and other rewards as they progress and more than 7,500 took part in the county last year.
This year the challenge runs from July 13 to September 7 and volunteers are asked for a minimum of two hours each week, excluding any planned holiday.
Anyone wishing to volunteer aged 12 to 15 needs to complete an expression of interest form along with a parental consent form which must also be signed. A teacher reference must also be submitted, and there is also a form for that.
For those aged 16 or 17, an additional reference is needed, which can be from school or an after-school club leader.
Anyone over 18 needs to complete the volunteer application form which needs two references.
All relevant forms must be returned to Wisbech library by Friday, June 7 to be considered for a volunteering position. Hard copies can be collected from our academy librarian Miss Robinson.
Volunteering for the summer reading scheme is a great opportunity to develop confidence and improve your communication skills while working as part of a team in the wider community.
And adding volunteering to your personal statement or CV is always a good thing and something that potential employers or universities will be looking for.
** The forms you need are also available to download from this post in a pdf format.
